Ultimate

Ultimate is a fitness app built on a simple idea: the workout should be shaped around the person doing it. Its core feature, the workout creator, turns a few taps — body parts, goal, the time you actually have — into a routine that belongs to you. Trainers, booking and progress tracking are built around it.

Context & problem

Ultimate needed to connect a broad workout catalogue with the user’s current goal and available time. A catalogue provides choice, but still leaves the selection work to the user.

Collecting enough information for personalisation without extending the start flow was a key constraint. The product had to create a useful routine from a small number of inputs.

Workout creation, trainer discovery, booking, active exercise, and progress tracking all lived in the same app. These modules needed to share a navigation and visual system without feeling like separate products.

The active workout introduced a different use condition: information had to remain legible and controls limited while the user was moving.

Design approach

  • We put the workout creator at the centre of the product instead of hiding it in settings. It sits at the top of the home screen and in the middle of the tab bar: pick body parts and a duration, get a workout made for you. Two decisions, not a questionnaire.
  • We treated the generated routine as a real object, not a result screen. Every workout has a cover, a difficulty level, duration and calories, an expandable step list with a thumbnail and length for each exercise, and a single obvious action to start it.
  • We made trainers read as people. A photo, a rating, years of experience, a speciality, today's availability and the faces of the people already joining the session — everything you need to decide before you book.
  • We kept booking short and honest. The payment step shows the trainer, the workout, the date, the time and the cost side by side, so nothing is confirmed with a number the user has not seen.
  • We designed the workout itself as a full-screen, hands-off state. A large timer, the name of the current step, what comes next, and only the controls you can use while moving.
  • We let progress answer one question: how is this week going? A day strip, a completion ring with a sentence instead of a metric, three stat tiles for exercises, calories and minutes, and a single activity chart underneath.
  • We kept the interface bright, quiet and mostly white, with near-black primary buttons and purple reserved for creation and progress. The photography carries the energy so the UI does not have to.

Outcome: the workout creator became the main entry point, with creation, booking, and progress flows completed under one design system.
